In his 19th century lithograph “La Samaritaine,” Czech artist Alfons Mucha announces a theater performance with French actress Sarah Bernhardt based on the New Testament story of the woman at the well. Here, we see the Samaritan woman with her water jug, ready to draw water for herself and the Savior. In a halo above the girl’s head, Mucha has written the words “Jehovah,” Christ’s name in premortality meaning “eternal,” in Hebrew lettering. In this celebration of femininity and conversion, the piece reminds us of women’s prominent roles as witnesses and testators of Jesus. Christ’s first recorded declaration that He is the Messiah was to this unnamed woman. Her story in the scriptures is an invitation for us, too, to encounter Christ, leave our pasts behind, and testify of Him.
